Subject Fuel and oil recomendation

Author Dave Shively (mos33c20@centurytel.net)

I'm going to become a Jaguar owner this weekend with the purchase of a pristine 1987 Series II XJ6. I'll be driving back to Oregon from California and would like to know the recommended octane rating for fuel, and also what kind of oil should I buy if needed. Synthetic or refined? What viscosity?

I'll be joining JOCO soon.

Thanks,
Dave

My 2000 XK8 calls for 5W30 oil and 92 octane or better fuel. I use Dyno oil and change oil & filter every 3000 miles.

Too late for this post, but premium fuel and a 10w-30 would work. Also, consult with Consolidated Motors and/or The Jag Shop for technical information and a full mechanical work-up on your car to assure you have a handle on what's major and minor and in what order any needs should be addressed.

All the best,

Thanks Carl. On the recommendation of the Jag Shop I took it to Faulkner, NW Portland. After two attempts they seem to have fixed it. They’re very nice, helpful, and understanding folks. My new challenge is fixing the broken A pin wire from the 3 pin harness that plugs into the voltage regulator. Ugh!!!

Radio Shack may have a "Pin Straightener" or replacement tool. My best bet would be to suggest you call the Avionics dept. at Aero Air at the Hillsboro Airport and see if they could look your problem over. If they have the tool and a replacement pin you may be money ahead to have a "pro" do it.

Best of luck,
Carl

The event has been changed from full on concours to a casual picnic. The attendance is down quite a bit this year.

I was supprised and disappointed to have my registration application returned. I hope the event will take place in 2010 as this is the one event I plan for every year. I am also sure that the loss of the event will make it more difficult for those competing for natioal points.

Anyone interested in touring up to the Victoria show? We are leaving Thursday morning (July 30th) from Eugene and will be headed to Port Townsend either up Hood Canal or through Bremerton depending on traffic and construction. We are catching the noon ferry from Port Angeles for the weekend in Victoria with our Victoria club friends. Monday (Aug. 3rd) we are sailing to Anacortes on the way home and plan to explore and do some touring on Chuckanut Drive, heading home on Tuesday. Anyone is welcome to join us for either leg. If you have never been, this is by far the best Jaguar anywhere. Email me for details jaguar@oldirish.com. Jerry

Subject Should I keep my Dad's Jag?

Date Tue Sep 22 2009 08:04

Author Chris Humphrey (geohumphrey@yahoo.com)

File: 1Jaguar XJ6 119861 11.jpg

Hi,

My father died a few months back. He owned and loved his 1986 Jaguar XJ6 series III (184,000 miles). His Jag was an everyday driving car for him, but it was also a bit of a hobby, he spent thousands of dollars a year keeping it maintained and running and looking good (I have an inch wide folder of all the maintenance and repairs he put into the car in the past 10 years). Based on what I can tell, the car is currently in really good condition, with only a few minor issues (including; breaks pulse, speedometer and odometer are not accurate and stick, and one of the rear windows don't open).

I was planning on selling the car, but after driving it for a bit I have literally fallen in love with it and would like to keep it. But I'm worried about maintenance costs; I don't have the same money or time as my dad did to put into it. I already know it gets poor gas mileage. But I've also heard that these cars are constantly breaking down, and their repair costs are high (I do not know how to work on cars so I would have to bring it to a shop).

I was hoping that you could give me an idea about typical costs to maintain these Jags; and what I typically have to do on a yearly basis to maintain them in good order. Again, the car is currently in good to great conditions, so I don't think I need to put too much money up-front at first.

If I keep the car, I would like to eventually use it as an everyday driver. Also, I don't have a garage, so it would be parked outside in the Portland OR weather (another worry of mine).

Thanks!

     Subject Keep the Jag

Date Fri Oct 16 2009 10:18

Author Carl Foleen (cafoleen@europa.com)

First, get an objective look at the current "issues" with the car. Contact The Jag Shop or Consolidated Motors. Both are honest shops and competent to assess & repair since they're marque specialists.

I would ask the shop to prioritize what they have found into "must do," "do soon" and "whenever" items.

You don't have to restore the car, you should make it reliable and safe.

If you are a member of AAA contact them about Haggerty insurance on your car for an agreed-value coverage.

Your repairs should not be that expensive, and if you want to do a little work as a do-it-yourself project, I would recommend joining the Jaguar Owners Club of Oregon and finding some members that can offer advice, or possibly assist you with the jobs you feel you want to do yourself. Oil changes and other items are always simple to do if you have a ramp or jacks to support the car. Don't forget to block the wheels!

You can use a good car cover if the weather is particularly nasty. Use a good quality surface treatment - Meguirs, Zymol, Griot's all come to mind. I prefer the excellent products you get from Griot's. Buy their kit, it's worth the $ for every car you own.

A well-maintained car is much less expensive than one that has things put off until you have to tow it to the shop.

Look forward to seeing you on the membership rolls.

Could it read PAD? That would indicate break pads getting low. Also if you want to clear the check engine light, disconnect the battery and re-connect after a few minutes to see if the light comes back on or not.

Subject Starting a cold engine

Date Fri Apr 16 2010 12:09

Author al jasso (ajasso@q.com)

So my Mark II has been sitting for seven months and I do not want to start the engine without first pressurizing the oiling system. I have been given various advice about cold start-ups ranging from pulling the plugs to just start the darn thing. I am just not comfortable with these proceedures on an engine that has been sitting for so long.

To that end I would like to build or acquire an engine pre-luber to pre-lub the engine before attempting a cold start. I have heard that one can build a pre-luber with an oil pump, some fittings, and a sturdy (2 gal) plastic bucket. XK engines have a convienent oil gallery acess so it should be a simple task pressureize the system.

So, has anyone built one of these or any other ideas on the subject?

I would like to know what the collecting thinking of our Jaguar community is on this subject.

Thanks for you input

Al

Author Bonnie (bsherar@msn.com)

My brother-in-law is rebuilding a 1960-61 Jaguar XK150. The license plate when he bought it was out of Spokane County. He is pretty certain that this car once belonged to one of his friends who rolled it years ago.
Looking for any way to track past ownership. (his friend has passed away)
